Layering necklaces is one of the easiest ways to make a simple outfit feel finished, but done wrong, it just looks tangled. Here is how to do it properly.

Start with length, not quantity

The golden rule is spacing, not stacking. Two or three necklaces at clearly different lengths always look better than five at similar ones. A good starting combination is a short pendant sitting at the collarbone, then a slightly longer piece a few centimetres below it.

Use your extension chain

Mix, do not match, textures

A plain chain next to a pendant, or a delicate piece next to something with a bit of pavé, reads as intentional. Three identical chains at very similar lengths can look accidental instead of styled.

Gold with gold, silver with silver. Mixing tones in a single layered look is a more advanced styling choice, so it is worth starting consistent while you find what suits you.

Prevent tangling before it happens

Clip necklaces to different loops before wearing, or use a small extender clasp on one piece. It takes a moment and saves a genuinely annoying five minutes of untangling later.
