Some jewellery is simply pretty. A knot ring is pretty with a meaning. The shape of two strands wrapped together has been used in jewellery for centuries, and it still feels just as relevant today, whether you wear it for yourself or give it to someone who matters.
This guide covers what a knot ring represents, what to look for when you buy one, and how to wear it so it looks effortless every day.
What does a knot ring mean?
A knot is one of the oldest symbols of connection. Two separate strands are tied together so that they hold each other in place, which is why knots are so often linked with love, friendship and commitment. Even everyday language reflects this: getting married is still called tying the knot.
Because of that, a knot ring can mean different things to different people. For some it is a reminder of a relationship. For others it marks a friendship, a promise, or a personal milestone. And for plenty of people, it is simply a beautiful shape that catches the light. All of these are good reasons to wear one.
What to look for when buying a knot ring
The metal
A ring is the piece of jewellery that works hardest. It is knocked against desks, washed with your hands and worn all day. That is why the metal matters. Look for 925 sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver and should be stamped or engraved with 925 on the inside of the band. Rings made from brass or other base metals with a thin coating can wear through quickly and may leave a green mark on your finger.
The finish
Gold tones on a silver ring usually come from 18K gold plating. Silver tones are often finished with rhodium plating, which gives a bright white shine and resists tarnish. A clear protective coating on top helps both finishes last longer.
The stones
Many knot rings are set with small sparkling stones in a style known as pavé, because the stones sit close together like a paved path. Good quality cubic zirconia gives lasting sparkle at an accessible price. Check that the stones sit evenly and securely, with no gaps or raised edges that could catch on clothing.
The comfort
A knot sits higher than a plain band, so the rest of the ring should be smooth and comfortable. A slim plain band on the underside of the finger makes a ring much easier to wear all day.
Why two tone works so well
Mixing silver and gold used to be a styling rule people avoided. Now it is one of the easiest ways to make your jewellery feel personal. A two tone knot ring takes the idea one step further: the gold and silver tones meet in a single knot, which suits the meaning of the design perfectly.
It is also practical. A ring with both tones in it sits comfortably next to your silver pieces and your gold pieces, so you never have to choose.
How to wear a knot ring
On its own
A knot ring has enough detail to be worn alone. On the index or middle finger it becomes a quiet statement. On the ring finger it can take on more meaning, especially when given as a promise or anniversary gift.
Stacked with other rings
Let the knot be the centre of the stack. Add a slim plain band on one side and a single stone ring on the other. Keep the extra rings simpler than the knot so it stays the focal point. Mixing silver and gold bands works especially well around a two tone knot.
Matched with other jewellery
If you wear a T bar necklace or a tennis bracelet, a knot ring ties the whole look together. Choose pieces with a similar finish or a similar level of sparkle, rather than trying to match everything exactly.
Getting the size right
Ring size is the one thing that makes buying a ring online feel risky, so it is worth taking two minutes to check. In the UK, ring sizes are shown as letters. The easiest way to find yours is to take a ring you already wear on the same finger and compare it with a ring size chart. Remember that fingers are slightly larger in warm weather and later in the day.
Our Ring Size Guide shows UK, US and EU sizes side by side.
Is a knot ring a good gift?
Yes, especially when you want a gift that says something without needing to explain it. A knot ring works for a partner, a best friend, a sister or a mother, and its meaning adapts to the relationship. If you are buying it as a surprise, borrow a ring they already wear for a day to check the size.
How to care for your knot ring
- Take it off before washing your hands with soap, showering or swimming
- Put it on after hand cream and perfume
- Remove it for the gym, gardening and cleaning
- Store it on its own in a soft pouch so the stones do not scratch other pieces
- Wipe it gently with a polishing cloth when it looks dull
