The metal

This matters more than anything else, because a T-bar sits right against the base of your neck all day. Look for 925 sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure silver. Cheaper versions are often brass or other base metals with a thin coating, which can wear through, discolour and leave marks on the skin.

Sterling silver should be stamped or engraved with 925 somewhere on the piece. If a listing does not tell you the metal clearly, treat that as a warning sign.

The finish

Plain sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time. A protective coating such as e-coating slows that process and helps the piece keep its shine for longer. Gold tones are usually created with 18K gold plating over a silver base, which lasts noticeably longer than gold plating over brass.

The chain

Because the bar pulls slightly on the chain every time you move, the chain needs some strength. A box chain or a fine curb chain holds its shape well and sits flat against the skin. Very thin cable chains can look delicate but are more likely to kink.

The bar size

A bar of around 15mm to 25mm is visible without being heavy. Anything much larger starts to feel like a statement piece rather than an everyday necklace.

The length

Most T-bar necklaces look best sitting at or just below the collarbone. A 40cm chain with a small extender gives you room to adjust it for different necklines.

The simplest option is often the best. A T-bar on its own with a crew neck, a plain white shirt or a simple knit gives a clean, modern look. Because the bar sits at the front, it draws attention to the neckline without needing anything else.
